Healthy Ireland Day

We did a number of activities to promote health and fitness.
We started with 9@9 in the morning, at lunch time we did races in the yard, a tug of war, and finally a penalty shootout!

9 @ 9

Every Friday we do 9@9 where the children do 9 minutes of exercise with Mr. Neville before going into class. The children and staff take part!!

How I Stay Fit- 6th Class

How I stay fit

I stay fit by playing a lot of sports. I play camogie, which is my favourite sport, soccer and Gaelic football. Every day after school I do my homework and then go outside and hit a sliotar off a wall. Some days I would be out there for over 2 hours. Then I would practice my solos, so I would run around a lot while doing that. I play for 4 different clubs. I play for Seandun, St Vincent’s camogie and hurling club, Hollyhill ladies football club and Delaney’s Gaelic football club. I do soccer training on Monday, Camogie on Wednesday, I do Gaelic on Thursday and I do more camogie on Saturdays and Sundays and then I would have matches on any other day. I stay fit by eating fruit and vegetables as well. I don’t eat much sweets anymore, only if it’s a special occasion. I like staying fit because if I didn’t I wouldn’t be able to play much sport because I wouldn’t be able to run. I also wouldn’t be able to play for the school soccer, Camogie or Gaelic team and we are in the Sciath Na scoil final in a few weeks. I think we are going to win. We will definitely win if all our team stay fit. That’s why there is also a good side of staying fit. That’s why I like to stay fit and how I stay fit.

Sciath na Scol Football

Scoil Padre Pio, like we do every year, entered two teams into the Sciath na Scol football tournament. (Boys and Girls). Both teams had been doing very well and the children were really enjoying it. Both teams got through their group stages with difficult semi finals ahead of them. Both semi finals were played side by side in St. Vincent's GAA club on Tuesday 16/10/18.

The boys team were finished first in a thrilling game that saw us leading by a goal for a lot of the game. St. Mary's piled on the pressure in the second half and came within 2 points early in the second half. Padre Pio had to work extremely hard but thanks to a fantastic punch in the dying seconds from our goalkeeper, we held on to the lead and have now qualified for the final!

The girls team who were behind for a lot of the game but kept knocking at the door had a different type of game. They had to work extremely hard to claw back but our girls persevered. We scored a goal to secure a draw and extra time. After 5 minutes of extra time Padre Pio girls also became finalists with a scoreline of 1-5 to 1-3.

As you can see, both teams are over the moon and ready for the challenge ahead! The boys will meet Sunday's Well who claimed a narrow victory in the group stages over us, while the girls will play North Presentation for the decider. This is the third time the girls will play North Presentation and it currently stands at one win each. We are extremely proud of both teams and look forward to the finals.

Hurling / Camogie

After-School hurling and camogie takes place every Monday for boys and girls in 4th, 5th and 6th class. Children from 1st, 2nd and 3rd classes are hurling every Tuesday. Sessions take place from 2:30 until 3:15 and are free of charge. All welcome regardless of experience! Finally, a big thank you to all the teachers who give up their free time to facilitate hurling and camogie coaching in school!
